What is an archetype in Clash Royale?
A Clash Royale archetype is a named pattern of win condition plus support — Hog Cycle, Log Bait, Beatdown — not just eight random cards.
An archetype is a named pattern: a win condition plus the supporting cards that make that win condition work. "Hog Cycle" is an archetype. "Eight cards that include Hog Rider" is not, until the rest of the list is actually cycling Hog.
Players use archetype names as shorthand because the alternative is reciting eight cards every time. The names drift ("bridge spam," "bait," "control") and two sites will disagree on the edges. That is expected. An archetype is a cluster, not a ISO standard.
How DeckBeacon names them
Each ranked deck carries an archetype string produced by the catalog pipeline — the same namer the mobile app shows. Landing pages live at /decks/archetype/… for names that have enough lists to be worth a hub. A name with only one or two decks does not get a page just to occupy a URL.
Those hubs are the right place to browse "hog cycle decks." This glossary page is the definition. Duplicating a 200-row list here would cannibalise the catalog page and go stale the next snapshot.
Archetype vs win condition vs Rating
- Win condition — the scoring card
- Archetype — the pattern that card lives in
- Rating — a 0–100 Wilson score on the specific eight cards (and forms, and Tower Troop) in the sample
A weak Hog Cycle list and a strong Hog Cycle list share an archetype and split on Rating. Filter the archetype hub by Rating or popularity the same way you filter /decks. Unrated lists still show a dash under 50 decisive games.
Why the name can change
Deck identity is the eight cards, their special forms, and the Tower Troop — hashed, so the URL can survive a rename. The display name and archetype label can move when the namer gets better or the supporting cards shift how the list plays. If you bookmarked a deck, the id in the URL is the stable half. See methodology under deck identity.
