What is a Champion in Clash Royale?

A Champion is a Clash Royale card with an ability and its own slot rules. Why Champions are not Evolutions, and how they appear in ranked decks.

A Champion is a Clash Royale card with an activated ability and a different collection of rules from ordinary troops, spells, and buildings. You bring at most one in a deck. In battle, the ability is a separate input from "play the card."

On DeckBeacon, Champions matter because they change slot order and because they do not set the Evolution/Hero bitmask. A pipeline that assumes "special form bit means Champion" will either hide them or badge them wrongly. The catalog adds Champions to the slot order explicitly.

What a Champion is not

  • Not an Evolution — cycling a Champion does not "evolve" it
  • Not Hero form — different cards, different bits
  • Not a Tower Troop — the tower is a separate slot; Tower Troop

Copy-deck still uses the official eight-card + tower URL. The Champion is one of the eight. The ability is not a form bit the link could carry anyway; you play it in-game as Clash Royale already does.

How to use this on the ranked list

If you own a Champion at a usable level, include it in the card filter on /decks to see ranked lists that actually play it. If you do not own any, exclude the ones you keep facing so you can practice the matchup with a list you can copy.

Archetype names will often mention the Champion when it defines the pattern (a Mighty Miner cycle list is not "generic cycle"). Trust the archetype hub when one exists; do not treat a glossary page as a tier list.

Sample limits

The snapshot is Path of Legends ranked battles. A Champion that is everywhere in mid-ladder challenges and rare on the sampled leaderboard will look rare here. That is the bounded sample talking, not a verdict on the card. Path of Legends, methodology.
